About this book
What should rule your life: a clear mind, or the anger and desire that pull it off course?
In The Teachings of Silvanus, an unnamed teacher speaks to a young man he calls his son. His counsel is urgent and practical: guard your thoughts, watch your words, and choose your friends with care. Anger, greed, lust and pride threaten the inner discipline he asks his pupil to cultivate.
This short wisdom book brings early Christian teaching into conversation with Greek philosophy. Its loosely linked sayings move from everyday conduct to questions of self-knowledge and God. At its heart stands a vivid portrait of Christ as wisdom, guide and rescuer. The teacher urges his son to seek the divine mind within.

A father's voice from ancient Egypt
The Teachings of Silvanus is the fourth work in Codex Seven of the Nag Hammadi library. That codex also holds writings such as the Apocalypse of Peter and the Three Steles of Seth. The Coptic text is in the Sahidic dialect and is fairly well preserved, though a few lines are damaged. Scholars agree that it is a translation of a lost Greek original.
The book belongs to a very old kind of writing, the instruction of a teacher to a pupil. Egyptian, Hebrew and Greek traditions all had such books, and the Bible has the Book of Proverbs. Here the teacher keeps addressing the reader as my son, and the tone is warm but firm. He does not tell a story or build one long argument. He gives short counsels, warnings and prayers, and he often returns to the same themes from a new side.

What is the Teachings of Silvanus about?
It is a set of counsels from a teacher to his son. It urges him to rule his passions with the mind, to know God, to guard his soul, and to follow Christ as wisdom.
Is the Teachings of Silvanus a Gnostic text?
Most scholars say no, or not strictly. It lacks the Gnostic myths of a flawed creator and heavenly rulers. It is better described as Christian wisdom writing shaped by Greek philosophy, though it was found with Gnostic works.
Who was Silvanus?
The text does not say. The name is known from the letters of Paul, but nothing proves a link. The real author is unknown, and most scholars treat the name as a title attached to the work.
