About this book
What if the highest truth lies beyond everything you can think, name, or know?
Allogenes the Stranger is an ancient religious treatise that speaks in the voice of a seeker receiving heavenly instruction. Allogenes records what he is shown for Messos, whom he calls his son. According to the text, the path toward the divine leads beyond the material world and the ordinary powers of mind.
Within this Sethian Gnostic vision, divine being unfolds in layers, including the realm of Barbelo. Above all stands the Unknowable Spirit, described through what cannot be said about it. The ascent asks for stillness rather than ordinary thought. This is a demanding exploration of contemplation, not a story driven by plot.

A lost Greek book survives in Coptic
Allogenes the Stranger comes from the Nag Hammadi codices, a set of thirteen leather-bound books found by farmers near the town of Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt. The books were made in the fourth century. They hold more than fifty works, many of them unknown before the find. Allogenes is the third work in Codex Eleven, and it fills roughly twenty pages of the codex.
Scholars agree that the Coptic text is a translation from a Greek original. The Greek is lost. The copy that survives has damaged places, so some lines are missing or have to be pieced together by editors. Readers of modern translations will often see gaps marked in the pages.
