About this book
A sword waits in a stone, while a country without a strong ruler suffers.
In Mary Macgregor’s Stories of King Arthur’s Knights, Told to the Children, a boy draws that sword and becomes king. Guided by Merlin, Arthur builds a fellowship sworn to protect the weak. Queen Guinevere brings the Round Table to Camelot, where no knight sits above another.
Beyond the court, quests lead through forests and across rivers. Gareth hides his royal rank and must earn trust through patience and courage. Launcelot rides to help those in need, while Galahad takes up the search for the Holy Grail. Yet pride, jealousy and love strain the promises that hold Arthur’s kingdom together.

A boy draws the sword and rules
The story opens in a Britain without a strong ruler. After the death of King Uther, lords fight each other and the poor suffer. The wizard Merlin, who has long watched over the royal family, knows that a rightful heir exists, though almost no one knows where he is. The boy is Arthur, raised in secret by a knight called Sir Ector and brought up beside Ector's son Kay.
A sword is found fixed in a stone, and a message says that whoever can pull it out is the true king. Many strong lords try and fail. Arthur, still a youth, pulls the sword free almost by accident, when he needs a weapon for Kay and finds one waiting. The scene is simple, and that is part of its power. The right person is not the loudest or the richest, but the one the land has been waiting for.

What is Stories of King Arthur's Knights about?
It retells the legends of King Arthur for children. It covers Arthur's rise as king, the founding of the Round Table and the adventures of knights such as Launcelot, Gareth, Tristram and Galahad, including the quest for the Holy Grail.
Is the story of King Arthur true?
No. Arthur is a figure of legend, and historians debate whether any real leader lies behind him. The tales grew over centuries, and many of the best known were gathered by Sir Thomas Malory in the fifteenth century.
What is the Round Table in the Arthur legends?
It is the great table at Camelot where Arthur's knights sit. Because it is round, no seat is the head, which shows that every knight is equal and bound by the same vows of honor and service.
