About this book
What happens to a proud Senate when one man holds all the power?
Augustus is dead, and Tiberius takes his place. In The Reign of Tiberius, Cornelius Tacitus follows the transfer of power into a world of frontier mutinies, Senate trials, and dangerous ambition. Germanicus steps forward as soldiers revolt, while Rome’s ruling class faces the demands of serving an emperor without surrendering its pride.
Tacitus brings you close to Tiberius, Germanicus, Livia, and Sejanus, the minister who wins the emperor’s trust. A Roman senator himself, he writes long after these events, with his own experience of harsh emperors shaping his view. He follows each year’s events, then pauses over motives: what people seek, what they fear, and why they bow.

Power passes quietly and with pretence
Tacitus begins with the death of Augustus in the year 14. Augustus had ended the civil wars and ruled as first citizen, while keeping the old titles of the Republic. Tacitus notes that few people were still alive who had seen the Republic at work. Most Romans had grown used to one man deciding everything, and many were glad of the peace.
Tiberius was the stepson of Augustus and had been adopted by him as heir. He was an experienced soldier, already middle aged, and a gloomy, guarded man. When the Senate urged him to take the throne, he hesitated and spoke as if he would rather share the burden. Tacitus does not believe the show. He suggests that Tiberius wanted to look as if he had been called to power, not seized it.
