About this book
What if the woman who seeks power over fate cannot command her own heart?
In Wisdom's Daughter, H. Rider Haggard returns to the early life of Ayesha, the feared queen of She. Raised in Arabia by a scholarly father, she grows into a proud woman hungry for knowledge and power. Then Kallikrates, a Greek priest of Isis bound by sacred vows, becomes the object of her love.
The story moves to an imagined ancient Egypt, where temples, priests and kings surround the lovers. Amenartas, an Egyptian princess, becomes Ayesha's rival, while the court of Pharaoh Nectanebo frames their struggle. Learning and faith shape Ayesha, but longing tests her will. Can she master fate without becoming a prisoner of desire?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A vision of two goddesses opens the tale
Ayesha begins in a dream of heaven. As a spirit she stands before Isis, who asks for news of Egypt. The temples stand empty, the spirit says, because the people now bow to Aphrodite, the Greek queen of love. The two goddesses quarrel with Egypt as the stake.
Isis leaves with a curse on Egypt. Aphrodite takes the empty throne and shows the young spirit a beautiful man, fated to be hers from the beginning.

What is Wisdom's Daughter about?
It tells the early life of Ayesha, the queen called She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed. Born in Arabia, she becomes a priestess of Isis in Egypt, brings down Sidon and a Persian king, and meets the Greek priest Kallikrates, the man she is fated to love.
Who is Ayesha in Wisdom's Daughter?
Ayesha is the daughter of an Arab chief named Yarab. She is taught by the prophet Noot and serves Isis as prophetess. She is also known as Child of Wisdom, Isis Come to Earth, and the woman who later rules at Kôr.
Do I need to read She and Ayesha first?
No. The book is told as Ayesha's own account, and it explains her past from the start. Readers who know the earlier books will see how it fills gaps, but the story is clear on its own.
