About this book
What if following your heart means defying a world that measures your worth by your fortune?
In Her Own Right by John Reed Scott brings romance and adventure into an Edwardian world ruled by money and manners. Inheritance shapes marriage, and family expectations narrow the path ahead. At its center stands a heroine whose claim to a place of her own gives the love story its force.
Buried treasure adds the promise of hidden wealth to the struggle between affection and social rank. A fortune offers a goal, but also secrets, rivals and reasons to venture into unfamiliar places. Love must contend with family, money and chance, while the heroine's independence raises a question: who gets to decide her future?

The book opens on the porch of a golf club above Northumberland. Colin Macloud reads in the paper that the brokers Royster and Axtell have failed, with debts of twenty million dollars. Geoffrey Croyden is not so lucky as his friends.
Upstairs, Croyden tells Macloud the sad arithmetic. His father left him about half a million dollars, and a company investment and a loan swallowed four hundred thousand of it. Only twenty thousand is left, an income of twelve hundred a year. He decides to vanish to a small property he owns on the Eastern Shore.
