A bankruptcy sends Croyden into hiding
The book opens on the porch of a golf club above Northumberland. Colin Macloud reads in the paper that the brokers Royster and Axtell have failed, with debts of twenty million dollars. Geoffrey Croyden is not so lucky as his friends.
Upstairs, Croyden tells Macloud the sad arithmetic. His father left him about half a million dollars, and a company investment and a loan swallowed four hundred thousand of it. Only twenty thousand is left, an income of twelve hundred a year. He decides to vanish to a small property he owns on the Eastern Shore.
Macloud, the one friend who rings true, says the crowd on the Heights drops anyone who loses money. Dinner at the Cavendish house proves him right. The sharpest pain is Elaine Cavendish, rich in her own right. Croyden thanks heaven he never proposed, and he says goodbye with a kiss on her hand.
Losing money costs Croyden his club, his friends and, he believes, his right to love.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about De son propre chef
What is In Her Own Right about?
It follows Geoffrey Croyden, a clubman ruined by a brokers' collapse, who moves to Hampton, Maryland, finds a pirate's letter in a secret drawer and hunts for buried jewels while a romance with Elaine Cavendish develops.
Who was Robert Parmenter in the book?
Parmenter is the dying pirate who wrote the 1738 letter. He buried a treasure near Annapolis in 1720 and left it to his friend Marmaduke Duval on condition that it be used only in an extremity of need.
Is Greenberry Point a real place?
Yes, Greenberry Point lies across the Severn River from Annapolis, Maryland, and the novel uses real landmarks such as Carvel Hall and the Naval Academy. The treasure, the letter and the characters are fiction.
What does the phrase pirate gold breeds pirate ways mean?
It is a refrain in the story warning that wealth taken by crime attracts crime in turn. Characters repeat it as thieves, blackmailers and kidnappers chase Parmenter's fortune.
Is In Her Own Right easy to read?
It is approachable, with short chapters, brisk dialogue and a clear plot built on letters and clues. The humor and the romance keep the story moving from the first scene on the club porch.
