About this book

What happens when Mark Twain stops putting his life in order and follows whatever catches his mind?

In Chapters from My Autobiography, Mark Twain turns memory into conversation. He begins wherever he pleases, moving through childhood, family, money, grief and opinions. There is no tidy march through dates. Instead, a born storyteller jokes, wanders, settles scores and sometimes drops the laughter to tell you something painful.

His memories lead to Hannibal on the Mississippi, summers on a Missouri farm and the Hartford household he shares with Olivia Langdon, whom he calls Livy. Alongside these warm scenes come business ventures and heavy losses. Throughout, Twain's timing and understatement bring comedy close to sorrow, without forcing either into a neat life story.

What you’ll discover

  • Boyhood beside the Mississippi Visit Hannibal and the farm summers that fill some of his warmest childhood recollections.

  • Money and costly mistakes See the businessman behind the storyteller, with investments in inventions and his own publishing firm.
  • Humor with a straight face Enjoy slowly built stories where an absurd detail arrives as though nothing unusual has happened.

Twain finds a new way to tell his life

Twain had started and abandoned autobiographies many times over the years. Each attempt died the same way. When he sat down to write, his life turned into a stiff and formal record, and he lost interest. He wanted the ease of ordinary talk, the way a man tells a story to friends across a table.

What is Chapters from My Autobiography about?

It is a selection from Mark Twain's dictated memoirs, covering his Missouri boyhood, his family, his business troubles, his friendships and his opinions, told in a loose and humorous way rather than in strict order.

When did Mark Twain write his autobiography?

He tried for decades, then found his method in his last years by dictating aloud. These chapters appeared in the North American Review in 1906 and 1907, and he kept dictating until near his death in 1910.

Is Chapters from My Autobiography a true story?

It is a real memoir, but Twain exaggerates and his memory is unreliable on details. Readers treat it as true to his character and experience, while scholars have corrected many dates and facts.
