About this book
What if the promise of an inheritance consumes the very life it seems to offer?
London lies under mud and fog while the Court of Chancery turns through an inheritance dispute few can understand. In Charles Dickens’s Bleak House, Jarndyce and Jarndyce drains fortunes and hope. John Jarndyce offers Esther Summerson, Ada, and Richard a home, but Richard finds the lawsuit’s promise hard to resist.
Esther brings kindness to others while struggling with shame about her own beginnings. Elsewhere, the wealthy Lady Dedlock shows an interest in legal handwriting that draws the attention of Tulkinghorn, her husband’s lawyer. As private histories and public injustice meet, family mysteries reach from grand houses into London’s poorest streets.

What is Bleak House about?
Bleak House follows people connected to an inheritance lawsuit, especially Esther Summerson and the young couple Ada Clare and Richard Carstone. Alongside their lives, Dickens develops a family mystery involving Lady Dedlock and shows how legal delay and social neglect harm both rich and poor.
What is Jarndyce and Jarndyce?
Jarndyce and Jarndyce is the fictional inheritance case at the centre of Bleak House. It has continued for generations in the Court of Chancery. Dickens uses it to show a legal system whose procedures become more important than the people seeking justice.
Why does Bleak House have two narrators?
Esther Summerson tells her own story in the first person, while an unnamed narrator describes the wider world in the third person. The two accounts combine intimate feelings with a broad view of courts, fashionable society, poverty, and the connections between them.
