About this book
What happens when a shop learns to sell desire—and a young woman refuses to surrender her dignity?
Denise Baudu arrives in Paris with her younger brothers, Jean and Pépé, and needs work to feed them. Across from her uncle Baudu's struggling draper's shop stands Au Bonheur des Dames, a vast store that dazzles customers and threatens the small traders around it. Denise finds a place behind its counters, where low pay and harsh expectations test her stubborn resolve.
The store's charming owner, Octave Mouret, turns display, fashion and a sharp understanding of desire into power. In The Ladies' Paradise, Émile Zola brings silks, lace and crowded counters vividly into view. A patient love story unfolds within this restless business world, where progress creates opportunity for some while squeezing the livelihoods of others.
