À propos de ce livre
What lies behind Beowulf’s monsters: remembered history, older legends, or the wider world of folk tale?
In Beowulf: An Introduction to the Study of the Poem, Raymond Wilson Chambers explores the world behind the Old English epic. This is a guide, not the poem itself. He asks who the Danes, Swedes and Geats are, and how their stories connect the poem to the early English and Scandinavian past.
Chambers follows the stories of Offa, Finn and the fight at Finnsburg, asking why they belong in a poem about a monster slayer. He also examines Grendel, his mother and the dragon through folk tale. At stake is how we read the whole: how its history, legends and monsters help us understand its purpose.

En bref
What if the monsters of Beowulf walk through a world that really existed? Picture a king so tall that no horse could carry him from the age of twelve.

One late manuscript, a world to check
The only manuscript of Beowulf sits in the British Museum. It was written about five centuries after the events the poem describes. Chambers compares that gap to the one between us and Shakespeare's Henry V and Agincourt.
The story is simple. The Geatish prince Beowulf sails to King Hrothgar's hall, Heorot. He slays Grendel, who has stalked the hall for twelve years, and then follows Grendel's mother to her home beneath the water. Years later, as king, he faces a dragon.

What is Chambers's Beowulf: An Introduction to the Study of the Poem about?
It is a scholarly guide to the history, legends and origins behind the Old English epic. Chambers tests the poem's kings, monsters and feuds against chronicles, Norse sagas, folktales and archaeology, and discusses its date and making.
Was Beowulf a real king?
Chambers finds no record of a Geatic king Beowulf outside the poem. The Geatas, Hygelac, Hrothgar and Eadgils have real background, but Beowulf's own reign cannot be proved and may be poetic invention.
Who were the Geatas in Beowulf?
Chambers agrees with most scholars that the Geatas were the Gotar of southern Sweden, south of lakes Wener and Wetter. The names match under the rules of sound change, and the poem's wars with the Swedes fit that setting.
