About this book
What if the life you dream of draws you away from the home you love?
Anne Shirley leaves Green Gables for Redmond College in Kingsport, carrying bright hopes and a romantic picture of her future. With Priscilla Grant beside her, she enters a world of studies, new friends and unfamiliar faces. Back in Avonlea, the people she loves have lives that are changing too.
In L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of the Island, college brings more than lessons. Anne writes, shares a house at Patty’s Place and tries to understand her heart. Gilbert Blythe remains a steady friend, while Roy Gardner seems to fit her dream of a perfect hero. But knowing what she wants means looking beyond the dream.
What you’ll discover

Anne leaves Green Gables for college
The story opens in Avonlea with the end of one life and the start of another. Anne Shirley is about to leave for Redmond College, and she has spent a busy summer helping to run the Village Improvement Society. She feels proud of her plans, but she also feels the ache of leaving. Every tree and path around Green Gables seems dearer now that she will be away.
Marilla Cuthbert, who raised her, shows love in her usual dry way. She does not say much about how she will miss Anne, but she fusses over the packing and the preparations. Marilla is also raising the twins Davy and Dora, orphaned relatives she took in, and Davy's mischief keeps the house lively. His questions and his schemes give Marilla plenty to do, and they make the leaving easier to bear for the reader.

What is Anne of the Island about?
It follows Anne Shirley through her years at Redmond College in Nova Scotia, with summers back at Green Gables. She makes new friends, meets suitors and slowly learns what love really means.
Do I need to read Anne of Green Gables first?
It helps, because Anne's history with Marilla, Diana and Gilbert is built in the first two books. Still, this novel is clear enough that a new reader can follow it and enjoy the college story.
Why is the book called Anne of the Island?
The title points to Prince Edward Island, the place Anne calls home. It suggests that she belongs to the island even while she lives away in Kingsport, and that home stays part of her.
