  2. Zadig pretends to worship candles, helping Setoc recognize the difference between created things and their maker.
  3. When Almona prepares to burn with her dead husband, Zadig persuades Setoc that the custom deserves abolition.
  4. Almona admits that fear of ridicule, rather than love for her husband, drives her decision.
  5. Almona offers to marry Zadig, but his attachment to Astarte prevents him from accepting.
  6. Zadig persuades the chiefs to require private conversation with a young man before widow burning, and the practice stops.
