Wuthering Heights, Chapter 9 yhteenveto

Chapter 9 / 34 · 25 min luvun lukemiseen

In Chapter 9, Heathcliff saves Hareton from a fall, then disappears after overhearing Catherine say that marrying him would lower her status, without hearing her declaration of love. Catherine becomes dangerously ill, recovers, and marries Edgar Linton three years after his father’s death, taking Ellen Dean away from Hareton.

Mitä tapahtuu

  1. Hindley threatens Ellen and endangers Hareton, but Heathcliff catches the falling child before he hits the stairs.
  2. Catherine tells Ellen she accepts Edgar’s proposal, although she feels that marrying him is wrong.
  3. Heathcliff leaves after hearing Catherine reject marriage to him on social grounds, missing her explanation of their deep connection.
  4. Catherine searches for Heathcliff, stays outside during a storm, and develops a dangerous fever.
  5. Catherine recovers, but Mrs. Linton and her husband catch the fever and die.
