Pikavastaukset

What is The Grapes of Wrath about?

The book follows Kentucky and his companions as they advance through shellfire, become separated, and face wounds and death. Their experiences connect the dangers of battle with friendship, loyalty, and the demands of service.

Where is The Grapes of Wrath set?

The action moves from a barn near artillery through a shelled village and communication trenches toward the firing line. A shell crater provides a place to hold out, while even the crowded dressing station remains threatened by shellfire.

Who dies in The Grapes of Wrath?

By the end of the book, Pug and Billy Simson are dead, and Larry cannot walk. Kentucky survives, but he delays his own evacuation to stay beside the dying Pug.

What are the main themes of The Grapes of Wrath?

The main themes are friendship under pressure, the uncertainty of battle, and the demands of service. Separation limits what the friends can do for one another, while their presence in battle does not mean they understand what is happening.

Why does Kentucky stay beside Pug in The Grapes of Wrath?

Kentucky stays beside the dying Pug out of loyalty, delaying his own evacuation rather than leaving his friend. His choice puts care for another person ahead of his own chance to leave the danger.

What happens when Pug pursues a helmet in The Grapes of Wrath?

Pug pursues a German officer's helmet, accidentally prompting other soldiers to advance. His personal desire for the helmet becomes an unintended military action, but tanks ultimately overcome the redoubt after infantry assaults fail.

What does Kentucky choose to do after his injury in The Grapes of Wrath?

The injured Kentucky chooses Red Cross service rather than staying home, despite Rose's plea that he remain safe there. His decision shows that injury does not end his sense of obligation and that service can mean more than advancing under orders.

Situational irony

Tausta

Kirjailija

Boyd Cable was the pen name of Ernest Andrew Ewart, a British writer who served in the First World War. He wrote The Grapes of Wrath during that conflict, drawing on British military experience on the Western Front. His war writing gives particular attention to ordinary soldiers, their speech, and their dependence on one another.

Aikakausi

On the Western Front, trenches, machine guns, and artillery made attacks across open ground extremely dangerous. British forces first used tanks in battle on the Somme in 1916, hoping to break through obstacles and defended positions. The novel places its soldiers within this changing warfare, where infantry depended on guns, machines, and coordination rather than courage alone.

Vastaanotto

Cable gained a wartime readership through accounts of British soldiers that supported the war effort while describing danger and suffering. This book belongs to that patriotic wartime writing. Today it can also be read for the tension between praise of soldiers’ endurance and the deaths and permanent injuries that make victory costly.

Use the wartime context to explain why Cable combines comradeship and comic accidents with artillery, tanks, and severe injuries, making individual bravery depend on collective action.
