Socrates on wisdom
Tekoäly on kirjoittanut tämän sivun kirjamme tiivistelmien pohjalta. Socrates ei ole kirjoittanut sitä.
Socrates thought wisdom began with admitting the limits of his knowledge rather than mistaking confidence for understanding. He tested claims through honest questions, asking whether people could explain what they believed they knew. His own wisdom lay not in possessing every answer, but in recognizing where answers were missing. He also connected this questioning life with duty: examining beliefs mattered enough that he would not abandon it simply to escape danger or win approval.
The oracle prompted an investigation
When Chaerephon heard at Delphi that no one was wiser than Socrates, Socrates was puzzled rather than satisfied. He sought someone wiser to test the answer, turning an apparent honor into a reason for examining other people's claims.
Questioning served the whole city
Socrates compared his role in Athens to a gadfly stirring a sleepy horse. This image gave his questioning a public purpose: he sought to disturb complacency, even when the people he challenged found that disturbance irritating.
Conduct mattered alongside spoken arguments
Xenophon's account placed greater emphasis on practical conduct and self-control. At his trial, Socrates treated the life he had led as an answer to accusations, adding a practical dimension to the examination of what a person claimed to know.
