William Shakespeare on happiness

William Shakespeare presented happiness as something that getting a desired prize could not guarantee. In Macbeth, he showed a man gaining a crown but losing the peace needed to enjoy it. Ambition fulfilled through wrongdoing brought fear rather than satisfaction. His tragedies also showed how grief, suspicion and concealed motives could undermine any outward appearance of success. He explored the distance between possessing what seemed desirable and feeling secure or at peace.
Success could deepen fear
Macbeth did not stop feeling threatened after becoming king. Banquo became another source of anxiety, and Macbeth arranged further violence. Shakespeare showed how attempts to protect an achievement could make life more frightening rather than more satisfying.
Promises could conceal their cost
The witches encouraged Macbeth with predictions whose meanings were not as straightforward as he believed. His eventual defeat exposed that gap. Shakespeare linked disappointed hopes with the danger of trusting assurances that seemed to remove uncertainty without truly doing so.
Trust mattered beneath public appearances
In Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, royal ceremony stood beside private suffering. Hamlet faced grief in a court filled with spying and hidden purposes, while Horatio offered steady friendship. This contrast suggested how little outward splendour could compensate for damaged trust.
