Who Geppetto is
Geppetto is a poor craftsman who wants to make a puppet from a piece of wood. The wood already behaves like a living creature before he carves it into Pinocchio. Almost as soon as Pinocchio has feet, he is ready to run away.
Geppetto and the others in the story
Geppetto cares for Pinocchio as a son, giving their relationship the affection of a father and child. He makes sacrifices to send Pinocchio to school, but a puppet theater draws the puppet away. Pinocchio means to go to school, yet temptation quickly pushes his good intentions aside.
Geppetto's kindness forms part of the care that Pinocchio can recognize and still fail to honor. The puppet's mistakes hurt the people who help him, not only Pinocchio himself. Their relationship gives a personal meaning to the story's concern with responsibility toward others.
