Mary, Chapter 4 yhteenveto

Chapter 4 / 31 · 5 min luvun lukemiseen

In Chapter 4, the girl seeks refuge in mountain scenery, reads in solitude, and gives up pleasures to help poor fishing families. Her intense religious feelings lead her to receive the sacrament at fifteen, while the narrator shows how compassion, imagination, and self-denial strengthen her passions without guidance.

Mitä tapahtuu

  1. The girl escapes coldness at home by visiting an ancestral castle and contemplating the sea and mountains.
  2. She reads in a secluded rocky hollow and sacrifices her own pleasures to help nearby fishermen and their children.
  3. Compassion sharpens her attention to suffering, while reading and grand natural scenes deeply shape her mind.
  4. She spends nights composing religious verses and considering whether anything except an infinite being can satisfy the soul.
  5. At fifteen, she studies scripture, keeps an overnight vigil, and receives the sacrament with intense emotion.
  6. Her inner development receives no guidance, and her strict self-control strengthens her capacity for absorbing passions.

Mihin kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota

The sentence links her disciplined self-denial with stronger passions. Her ability to ignore bodily needs does not make her emotional life less intense.
