Mary, Chapter 18 yhteenveto

Chapter 18 / 31 · 6 min luvun lukemiseen

In Chapter 18, Mary prepares to leave and tells Henry why she rejects her husband and trusts her own affections over social judgment. Henry urges caution but recognizes her settled convictions, and an interruption prevents his confession even though Mary already knows he loves her.

Mitä tapahtuu

  1. The ladies learn of Mary’s departure plans, and she hides her distress with uncontrolled talk and laughter.
  2. Left alone with Mary, Henry says accompanying her to England might threaten her future peace.
  3. Mary expresses her aversion to her husband and explains her intention to visit Ann’s relations.
  4. Henry plans to follow by mail packet and urges Mary to consider how her feelings might change.
  5. Mary defends lasting affection, religious hope, and the authority of conscience against social approval.
  6. An arrival interrupts their conversation before Henry declares the love Mary already recognizes.

Mihin kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota

Mary makes inward conviction more important than public approval. This principle supports her resistance to a marriage that cannot command her love.
