Who Widow Douglas is

Widow Douglas takes Huck into her home in St. Petersburg, a Missouri town beside the Mississippi River. She is kind and religious, and she tries to make him a proper boy.

Her household gives Huck a bed, clean clothes and a daily routine shaped by manners and religion. To Huck, however, these ordinary comforts and expectations feel stiff and smothering.

What Widow Douglas wants

Widow Douglas wants to civilize Huck through the habits she believes a boy should learn. He must say grace before meals, wear clean clothes and sit still for lessons.

Her efforts bring out the difference between her idea of care and Huck's desire for freedom. She offers a settled home, but he dislikes being told how to live.

Widow Douglas and the others in the story

Miss Watson is Widow Douglas's strict sister, and she teaches Huck spelling and Bible stories.

Huck's life with the widow also contrasts with his life under Pap Finn's control. Where the widow tries to guide him through rules, his violent father controls him through fear.
