Who Mr Jaggers is

Mr Jaggers is a powerful, shrewd lawyer whose work brings him into daily contact with criminals. His office stands in Little Britain, near Newgate prison, where Pip encounters a world of legal business and secrecy.

He has a cold, watchful face, bites his forefinger and repeatedly washes his hands.

Mr Jaggers and the others in the story

Jaggers visits Pip and Joe at the forge to announce an offer from someone who wishes to remain unknown. Pip is to move to London, receive an education and have an income suited to becoming a gentleman.

Jaggers insists that Pip keep his name and never ask who provides the money. Pip assumes Miss Havisham is responsible, but the lawyer says nothing that confirms this belief.

What Mr Jaggers wants

Jaggers manages Pip's affairs while keeping the identity of the person providing his money secret. He offers Joe payment for the loss of Pip's apprenticeship, but Joe refuses it.

His clerk, Wemmick, shares the dry atmosphere of the office, though his home life is warmer. Through Jaggers's business, Pip encounters a law that is cold without being simply wicked.
