Henkilöt

Utterson

Utterson is a lawyer whose concern for his friend Jekyll leads him to investigate Hyde. His help with the murder inquiry and his fear about the letter show friendship becoming entangled with suspicion.

Keskeiset osat: 2, 4, 5

Jekyll

Jekyll asks for loyalty while withholding the truth about Hyde. His confession reveals experiments and hidden wrongdoing, while his effort to blame Hyde alone suggests that explaining his divided identity does not settle his responsibility.

Keskeiset osat: 3, 7, 10

Hyde

Hyde's cruelty appears in the trampling of a child and the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. His identity as Jekyll's transformed self makes that violence inseparable from Jekyll's increasing loss of control.

Keskeiset osat: 1, 4, 10

Lanyon

Lanyon is Utterson's old friend and rejects Jekyll's scientific ideas. His account of witnessing Hyde become Jekyll reveals a shock that overturns his beliefs, while the sealed document preserves his testimony after his death.

Keskeiset osat: 2, 6, 9

Poole

His later decision to seek help shows that service no longer means simply accepting the authority exercised behind the locked door.

Keskeiset osat: 2, 8

Teemat

Secrecy and trust

Jekyll's request asks Utterson to offer help without the knowledge that might justify it. Lanyon's sealed account also separates trust from immediate disclosure, suggesting that protecting a secret can place a burden on the person expected to respect it.

Missä esiintyy: osat 3, 6

Loyalty and suspicion

Utterson's investigation begins with concern about his friend's will, so loyalty gives him a reason to ask questions. The handwriting comparison then makes that loyalty uncomfortable, showing how evidence can turn protective concern into suspicion of the person being protected.

Missä esiintyy: osat 2, 5

Divided responsibility

Hyde's murder gives a concrete consequence to the wrongdoing Jekyll tries to separate from himself. Jekyll's identification of Hyde as his transformed identity makes his assignment of guilt to Hyde alone suggest an evasion rather than a clear division of responsibility.

Missä esiintyy: osat 4, 10

Isolation and fear

Jekyll's withdrawal and Lanyon's secret show knowledge becoming associated with separation rather than companionship. When Jekyll refuses a walk and then displays terror during conversation, even a brief exchange suggests how fear cuts him off from the company offered to him.

Missä esiintyy: osat 6, 7

Symbolit

Jekyll's will

The will turns Jekyll's unexplained connection with Hyde into a formal obligation. Alongside his request for future help, it suggests an attempt to secure loyalty beyond his own presence.

Osat 2, 3

The handwriting

The similar handwriting makes two apparently separate identities look connected.

Osa 5

Sealed envelopes

The sealed account holds knowledge while preventing immediate access to it. It works as a physical form of secrecy, making the delay in understanding part of Utterson's obligation.

Osa 6

Kuuluisat sitaatit selitettyinä

Mr. Guest, Part 5. Guest speaks while comparing Hyde's letter with Jekyll's invitation. His observation suggests a connection beneath visible differences and turns an ordinary comparison into troubling evidence.

The narrator, Part 8. Finding Hyde's body does not resolve the mystery, showing how discovery can deepen uncertainty.

Henry Jekyll, Part 10. Jekyll makes this claim in his confession while explaining his divided life. It suggests his continuing effort to separate personal responsibility from the wrongdoing of his transformed identity.

Kirjalliset keinot

Restricted third-person narration

Menetelmä: Stevenson follows Utterson’s investigation for most of the story, limiting explanations to what the lawyer observes, hears, and mistakenly concludes. Vaikutus: Readers share Utterson’s uncertainty and must reconsider apparently convincing explanations when the final accounts reveal what he could not understand.

Missä: Osa 2, Osa 5, Osa 8

Epistolary form

Menetelmä: Stevenson ends the investigation with Lanyon’s written testimony and Jekyll’s confession, allowing documents to disclose events hidden from Utterson. Vaikutus: Readers move from interpreting scattered clues to comparing personal accounts, discovering that the mystery depends on concealed knowledge rather than missing evidence.

Missä: Osa 8, Osa 9, Osa 10

Literary doubling

Menetelmä: Stevenson gives Jekyll and Hyde different bodies and public identities while revealing that both belong to the same individual. Vaikutus: Readers are forced to question Jekyll’s attempt to separate his respectable reputation from responsibility for actions committed through Hyde.

Missä: Osa 9, Osa 10

Symbolism

Menetelmä: Stevenson makes Jekyll’s will, the matching handwriting, and sealed documents carry hidden connections between the characters and their guarded knowledge. Vaikutus: Readers learn to treat ordinary legal and personal papers as signs of concealed identity, threatened trust, and dangerous obligations.

Missä: Osa 2, Osa 5, Osa 6

Foreshadowing

Menetelmä: Stevenson plants clues to the final revelation through Jekyll’s unusual will, the similar handwriting, and Hyde’s appearance in oversized clothes. Vaikutus: Readers encounter warnings whose full meaning remains unclear until the ending, which makes the revelation surprising but supported by earlier evidence.

Missä: Osa 2, Osa 5, Osa 8

Foil

Menetelmä: Stevenson sets Lanyon’s rejection of Jekyll’s scientific ideas against Jekyll’s willingness to pursue experiments beyond accepted limits. Vaikutus: Readers see Jekyll’s ambition more sharply through Lanyon’s resistance, while Lanyon’s collapse exposes the disturbing consequences of crossing those limits.

Missä: Osa 2, Osa 9, Osa 10

Tapahtumapaikka

Tausta

Kirjailija

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist and travel writer, born in Edinburgh. He wrote Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in Bournemouth in 1885, while living there because of poor health. His upbringing in a religious household helped shape his interest in conscience and wrongdoing. The story places those concerns within a mystery about a respected doctor's hidden life.

Aikakausi

In late Victorian London, professional standing depended partly on appearing respectable, though expectations differed by class and social circle. The story appeared in 1886, soon after the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885 widened criminal penalties for sexual acts between men. This context helps explain the danger surrounding concealed conduct, but the story does not identify Jekyll's wrongdoing as a particular sexual offence.

Vastaanotto

Published in 1886, the story quickly attracted readers and discussion, including attention to its moral meaning. Its success soon led to stage adaptations, which helped make Jekyll and Hyde familiar figures beyond the book. Today it is read as Gothic fiction and as an exploration of divided identity, repression and scientific responsibility, rather than simply a contest between good and evil.

Use Victorian pressures around reputation to explain why Stevenson makes Utterson investigate indirectly and delays Jekyll's confession until the final account.

  2. Uncertain evidence. Examine how the handwriting comparison and the discovery of Hyde's body produce uncertainty as well as knowledge.
  3. Moral responsibility. Assess Jekyll's attempt to assign guilt to Hyde alone in light of the murder and his account of their shared identity.
