1. David and Peggotty travel by carrier’s cart to Yarmouth, where Ham takes them to a boat converted into a house.

3. David grows close to little Em’ly, who fears the sea’s dangers and dreams of becoming a lady.
4. Mr. Peggotty responds patiently to Mrs. Gummidge’s complaints, explaining that she misses her dead husband.
5. After a fortnight, David painfully parts from Em’ly and returns home, eager to see his mother.
6. Peggotty reveals his mother’s marriage; David meets Mr. Murdstone and finds his bedroom changed and a threatening dog outside.
