Who the dragon is
The dragon is an ancient creature that sleeps beside treasure in a burial mound on a headland. It guards this hoard for three hundred years before a theft breaks its rest. Its part in the story comes when Beowulf is an old king, responsible for protecting the Geats.
What the dragon wants
The dragon guards its treasure, and the loss of one cup is enough to stir its fury. A runaway servant takes the cup, disturbing a peace that has lasted for generations. The creature answers the theft by flying out at night and burning farms, halls and fields.
Its anger reaches beyond the thief, threatening the people and land under Beowulf's care. Even the king's own hall burns, making the danger personal as well as a threat to his kingdom.
