Lord Bullingdon and the others in the story
Barry approaches Lady Lyndon with ambitions that make marriage a route to property and social standing. Lord Bullingdon's resistance stands against Barry's efforts to exercise authority within the family.
Barry tells his own story, presenting himself as honorable and blaming resistance on other people's faults. That self-justifying perspective matters when reading about a character who challenges his authority.
