About this book
What does a creature learn about trust when survival teaches him to fear every living thing?
On a frozen river in the Canadian North, Henry and Bill drive their dog sled with wolves following in the dark. Here, during the Klondike Gold Rush, hunger rules the forest. Into this harsh world comes White Fang, a wolf-dog cub whose mother, Kiche, teaches him the difference between what eats and what is eaten.
When White Fang enters Gray Beaver’s camp, the dangers change. Humans hold power he cannot understand, and a young dog named Lip-lip turns camp life into a struggle. Jack London stays close to the animal’s senses as fear and violence shape him. Beneath the adventure lies a searching question: does birth decide a creature’s nature, or does experience?

Two men and a wolf pack
The novel opens in the frozen Northland, on a river lined with dark spruce. Two men, Henry and Bill, are driving a dog sled over the snow. On the sled lies a long box holding the body of a man called Lord Alfred, and the two men are taking it toward the nearest post. They are tired, short of food, and far from any help.
Behind them comes a pack of starving wolves. The wolves do not rush the men. They keep to the edge of the firelight, patient and hungry, and they wait. Each night the men count their dogs, and each morning one more dog is gone, as if the dark had swallowed it.
