About this book

In a forest divided by war, whom can two sisters trust to lead them safely home?

In James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, Cora and Alice Munro travel toward their father’s British fort. It is the summer of 1757, and Britain and France fight for North America. Their escort, Duncan Heyward, knows little of the forest. Their guide, Magua, gives him growing reason for doubt.

On the trail, they meet Hawkeye, a white scout raised among the Delaware people, and his Mohican companions, Chingachgook and Uncas. Ambushes, escapes and pursuits test their courage and trust. Beneath the adventure, Cooper asks what loyalty means when friendship, family and rival powers make competing claims—and whose future those powers threaten.

What you’ll discover

  • Shelter behind rushing water Follow Hawkeye toward hidden caves, where the forest’s dangers press close.
  • A scout’s personal code Meet a man whose loyalty to his friends matters more than any flag.

  • A landscape worth lingering over Pause beside waterfalls, hillsides and campfires as Cooper gives the wilderness its presence.

Its commander is Colonel Munro, a stern Scottish officer. His two daughters are coming to join him.
