About this book
A monkey storms Heaven, but can he tame his own restless mind?
In Journey to the West, traditionally credited to Wu Cheng'en, a stone gives birth to Sun Wukong. The Monkey King gains vast power, and pride drives him to challenge Heaven itself. His tricks and temper bring wild comedy to a tale that asks what strength is really for.
Tang Sanzang, also called Xuanzang, must travel from China to India for Buddhist scriptures. Gentle and easily fooled, he needs unlikely protectors: Wukong, the greedy pig Zhu Bajie, and steady Sha Wujing. Demons threaten the monk along the road, while the companions face trials that test more than their power.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stone egg becomes a monkey king
The book opens before history, with the making of the world. On one of four continents, in the kingdom of Aolai, stands Flower-Fruit Mountain.
On its summit lies an immortal stone that soaks up sunlight and moonlight for ages. One day it splits into an egg, and the wind turns the egg into a stone monkey. His eyes flash golden light up to the court of the Jade Emperor, who notes it and thinks little of it. That small neglect will cost him dearly.
