Who Sun Wukong is

Sun Wukong begins life as a stone monkey on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. His courage wins him a kingdom when he discovers a sheltered cave behind a waterfall. He later learns transformations from Subhuti and gains a magical staff that changes size.

What Sun Wukong wants

Fear of death first sends him away from his mountain to seek the secret of immortality. As his powers grow, so does his pride, and he demands recognition from Heaven. He calls himself the Great Sage, Equal to Heaven, refusing to accept a lowly place among its officials.

Sun Wukong and the others in the story

When he becomes the Tang Monk's guardian, his strength serves a purpose beyond his own glory. Their bond is uneasy because the gentle monk sometimes mistakes his attacks on disguised demons for cruelty. Guanyin provides a golden headband and a chant through which the monk can restrain him.

Wukong also quarrels with Zhu Bajie, while Sha Wujing often helps keep peace between them. Their shared dangers gradually soften the pilgrims' bickering into a bond of care.
