About this book
In a forest divided by war, whom can two sisters trust to lead them safely home?
In James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, Cora and Alice Munro travel toward their father’s British fort. It is the summer of 1757, and Britain and France fight for North America. Their escort, Duncan Heyward, knows little of the forest. Their guide, Magua, gives him growing reason for doubt.
On the trail, they meet Hawkeye, a white scout raised among the Delaware people, and his Mohican companions, Chingachgook and Uncas. Ambushes, escapes and pursuits test their courage and trust. Beneath the adventure, Cooper asks what loyalty means when friendship, family and rival powers make competing claims—and whose future those powers threaten.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two sisters set out for a fort
The story opens in 1757, when France and Britain are fighting for control of North America. Each side has Native allies, and the lands between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain are a dangerous no man's land. At Fort Edward, a British post on the Hudson, a small party prepares to travel north to Fort William Henry, which stands on the shore of Lake George. Its commander is Colonel Munro, a stern Scottish officer. His two daughters are coming to join him.
The sisters could hardly be more different. Cora, the elder, is dark haired, steady and quick to think. Alice, the younger, is fair, gentle and easily frightened, and she is the one everyone wants to protect. Cooper sets them side by side from the first pages, and the contrast matters later. Their father loves them both, but he has lived through hard years, and the book lets us see what those years cost him.
