In short

  • Gray Beaver is a Native hunter on the Mackenzie River in Jack London's novel White Fang.
  • He takes in White Fang and his mother, Kiche, giving the cub his name and a place in camp.
  • His treatment offers food and order, but White Fang learns obedience rather than love.

Who Gray Beaver is

Gray Beaver is the hunter whose camp brings White Fang into human life. He recognizes Kiche because she once belongs to his brother, and he claims her and her cub. He names the cub White Fang, who must now learn the rules of the camp.

Gray Beaver and the others in the story

Gray Beaver feeds White Fang and treats him with a hard kind of fairness. For White Fang, human power means safety as well as the threat of punishment. He feels something close to loyalty toward Gray Beaver, but obedience is not the same as affection.

Gray Beaver trades Kiche to Three Eagles to pay a debt, leaving White Fang behind. The separation teaches the young animal how little control he has over the bonds that matter to him.

How Gray Beaver changes

At Fort Yukon, Gray Beaver initially refuses Beauty Smith's attempts to buy White Fang. Beauty Smith supplies him with whiskey, and Gray Beaver's desire for more makes him willing to trade. This change exposes the limits of the security White Fang finds under his care.
