About this book
What does courage mean when fitting in means turning away from someone weaker?
Tom Brown grows up among village games and outdoor adventures in the Berkshire countryside. Energetic and good-hearted, he welcomes almost any contest. At Rugby School, he enters a world with rules of its own. His friendship with Harry East brings fun and companionship, but belonging asks more of Tom than a willingness to join the game.
Flashman, an older pupil, uses his power to torment weaker boys. Headmaster Dr. Thomas Arnold holds out another idea of education: learning to judge what is right, even without supervision. In Thomas Hughes's school novel, Tom faces the pull of the crowd and the harder task of joining courage with kindness.

In short
What would you do if your father put you on a freezing coach at three in the morning and told you to be brave, truthful and kind? That is how Tom Brown, a Berkshire squire's son, sets off for Rugby, a boys' boarding school.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A country boyhood shapes a fighting Brown
Hughes begins with the Browns, a family that fights every wrong in sight and trusts one another beyond all reason. Tom is born into this stock in the Vale of White Horse in Berkshire. The author lingers over the chalk hills and the thorn tree where King Alfred beat the Danes. He wants young readers to know their own country first.
Two old servants take over Tom's education. Noah Crooke wears a frightening wig. Benjy is kind and funny, and he teaches Tom to fish, to ride and to love the tales of Browns long dead. When the village feast comes, Benjy leads Tom into the fair.
