About this book

What if you could leave ordinary life behind and see the world only as art?

In Natsume Sōseki’s Unhuman Tour, an unnamed young painter and haiku poet walks into the mountains of southern Japan in spring. He wants distance from the demands of everyday feeling. Mountain paths lead him toward a remote hot-spring inn, where he hopes to look at life as a picture, a poem or music.

But the village offers more than quiet views. Nami, the inn’s beautiful daughter, puzzles him, while gossip shapes what he hears about her. A talkative barber brings comedy; a calm temple priest suggests another kind of stillness. As a distant war and the modern world press closer, the painter’s wish to stand apart becomes a question worth following.

What you’ll discover

  • A slower way of seeing Follow a mountain walk that moves through mood, memory and thought rather than a busy plot.
  • The mystery of Nami Meet a woman whose presence and village reputation challenge the painter’s detached gaze.
  • Comedy among quiet moments Step into the barber shop, where a stream of chatter brings everyday life close.
  • Art beyond the frame Explore what happens when a painter tries to turn everything he sees into beauty.
  • Stillness with a question Consider whether looking at life as art can offer enough distance from human feeling.

Climb the mountain to see life as art

The book opens with a painter of thirty climbing a mountain path, thinking. His first thought is blunt. Life is unpleasant wherever you go, because the human world was made by neither God nor the Devil but by your neighbors on the right, on the left and across the street.

What is Unhuman Tour about?

A painter walks into the mountains to spend a few days away from human troubles and settles in a quiet hot-spring inn. There he meets Nami-san, the owner's daughter, a priest, a barber and others, and tries to turn them all into pictures.

What does unhuman mean in this book?

Unhuman means looking at people and events as you would a painting or a Noh play, without taking sides or asking about their motives. The painter says it is not inhuman or cruel, only free from personal interest.

Who is Nami-san?

Nami-san is the daughter of the old man who owns the hot-spring hotel at Nakoi. She is quick, witty and unpredictable, and she has returned to her father's house after a failed marriage. The painter wants to paint her portrait.
