About this book
In a village that notices every mistake, who sees what the minister’s motherless children really need?
In Glen St. Mary on Prince Edward Island, the children of widowed minister John Meredith live under watchful eyes. Bold Faith loves a dare; gentle Una longs for a happier home. Their father is lost in books and grief, while neighbours are quick to judge each scrape.
Between the manse and Ingleside lies Rainbow Valley, a wooded hollow where the Meredith and Blythe children make a kingdom. Anne Blythe brings a kind presence, while hungry runaway Mary Vance brings new questions about care and belonging. L. M. Montgomery pairs village comedy with a tender look at children whom adults misunderstand.

A hollow where children make a kingdom
Rainbow Valley is a small wooded hollow that lies between Ingleside, where the Blythes live, and the manse, where the minister lives. It has a brook, a few maples, a thicket of young fir trees and a patch of wild flowers. Anne's children have always played there, and they name it for the rainbows they believe end in its green dips.
The Blythe children are a lively set. Jem is the eldest and a bold, cheerful boy who is drawn to adventure. The twins, Nan and Di, are girls with strong wills and quick tongues. Walter is the dreamy, sensitive one who sees beauty everywhere and feels hurt very deeply. Shirley is a quiet boy, and little Rilla is the baby of the family, still a small girl whom everyone spoils.

It follows the children of Anne Blythe and those of the new minister, John Meredith, as they play in a wooded hollow and cause stir in the village of Glen St. Mary on Prince Edward Island.
Do I need to read the earlier Anne books first?
It helps but is not required. Rainbow Valley is the sixth Anne book, and Anne is now a mother, but the story centres on the children and can be enjoyed alone.
Who is Mary Vance in Rainbow Valley?
Mary Vance is a blunt, ragged orphan who runs away from a cruel home and is found by the manse children. She brings both trouble and a surprising warmth into their lives.
