Über dieses Buch
How do you make a life when ambition pulls you forward and money, work, and love pull you apart?
Paul Kelver grows up in the crowded East End of Victorian London, far from the polished streets of the rich. Jerome K. Jerome follows him from childhood toward manhood, as home and schooling give way to questions of work, status, and earning a living. Paul wants a life of writing, but wanting is only the beginning.
Love and friendship shape Paul as deeply as ambition does. Affection, longing, and disappointment bring lessons no job can teach. Told with the feel of a grown man looking back, Paul Kelver places humor beside tenderness and hard experience. Readers who know Jerome for comedy find a gentler, more reflective mood here, with room for both laughter and hurt.

Kurz gesagt
Imagine a shabby brick house on the corner of a dull street in London's far East End. By day it turns its face away.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
An old house asks for a story
The narrator is drawn to a house at the corner of a drab East End street. Its railings are broken and washing hangs where a garden used to be. In daylight it seems ashamed. At night, it talks.
The House scolds him about his parents, the most helpless pair of children it ever saw. Faces drift by, and at the center stands a shy boy with golden curls and a grave face. The House urges the writer to tell his tale, because he has lived, and that is enough. The narrator promises a tale of a very ordinary boy who grows into a very ordinary man, loving a little and grieving a little.

What is Paul Kelver about?
It follows Paul Kelver from a shy childhood in a seaside village and a poor home in London's East End to a hard youth of clerking, theater and writing, as he learns what he really wants to be.
Is Paul Kelver based on a true story?
It is a novel, but Jerome drew on his own youth. Like Paul, he grew up in the East End and worked as a clerk, actor and journalist before writing for a living.
Who is Dr. Fighting Hal?
Dr. Washburn, a huge, bearded doctor in Poplar, is called Fighting Hal by the poor who adore him. He roars, drinks and brawls, yet he also guides Paul and cares for the sick.
