About this book
Behind Versailles’ grandeur, a maid watches power depend on private talk, daily habits and the fear of losing favour.
Memoirs of the Courts of Louis XV and XVI brings together Madame du Hausset’s account and memoirs bearing the name of the Princesse de Lamballe. As Madame de Pompadour’s personal attendant, du Hausset sees the private rooms where Louis XV and his favourite meet, talk and quarrel. Her view brings court life close, beyond its public grandeur.
The second set moves to Louis XVI’s court and Marie Antoinette’s friendship with the Princesse de Lamballe. Scholars doubt Lamballe’s authorship and generally treat these memoirs as another writer’s work. Read together, the accounts offer gossip, fear and favour: intimate details to weigh with care, rather than a settled record of a monarchy facing trouble.

A maid watches the court from close
Madame du Hausset served as femme de chambre, a personal attendant, to Madame de Pompadour. That post put her in the rooms where the king and his favourite met, talked and quarrelled. She was not a statesman or a courtier of rank, and she says little about grand policy. What she gives instead is the texture of a day in a powerful household.
The position mattered because a favourite in that court never stood alone. Ministers, financiers, doctors and priests all wanted to reach the king, and many tried to do it through the people near Pompadour. A trusted maid heard visitors wait, heard letters discussed, and saw who left pleased and who left worried. Du Hausset was one of those quiet listeners.

What are the Memoirs of the Courts of Louis XV and XVI about?
They give glimpses of life at the French royal court in the eighteenth century. One part comes from a maid of Madame de Pompadour, and the other, under the name of the Princesse de Lamballe, deals with Marie Antoinette's circle.
Who was Madame du Hausset?
She was a lady's maid, or femme de chambre, in the household of Madame de Pompadour, the favourite of Louis XV. Her position let her see and hear much of the private life of the court at Versailles.
Did the Princesse de Lamballe really write her memoirs?
Most scholars doubt it. She died in 1792, and the memoirs appeared later under her name. They are usually thought to be by another writer, so they are best read as a sympathetic portrait rather than her own record.
