Über dieses Buch
What if the promise of a fortune turns a happy home into a workshop of restless dreams?
Mark Twain’s The $30,000 Bequest, and Other Stories brings together humorous, ironic tales. Its title story begins in friendly Lakeside, where bookkeeper Saladin Foster and his wife, Electra, enjoy a comfortable family life. She grows their savings with care. By night, they share romantic tales and imagine a world far grander than their own.
Then a letter from their relative Tilbury Foster promises an inheritance—with strange conditions. They must keep silent about it and make no inquiries about his health. Saladin dreams of spending; Electra plans investments in coal mines. Soon, pencils replace their evening reading, and the prospect of wealth draws their attention away from the life they already love.

Kurz gesagt
Picture a small-town bookkeeper and his wife opening a letter that promises thirty thousand dollars. The money has not arrived.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
A spiteful uncle's letter sets a trap
Lakeside is a friendly little town in the Far West. Saladin Foster keeps the books at the leading store for eight hundred dollars a year. His wife Electra, called Aleck, holds the household purse.
Then a letter arrives from Tilbury Foster, a sour old bachelor said to be rich. He says he will soon die and leave Saladin thirty thousand dollars. He does it out of spite, because money has caused him trouble and he wants it to go on doing harm. The will pays only if Saladin never speaks of the gift, never asks after the dying man, and stays away from the funeral.

What other stories appear in Mark Twain’s collection about the bequest?
The book includes A Dog's Tale, Was It Heaven? Or Hell?, The Californian's Tale, Edward Mills and George Benton, and several comic sketches, essays and the diaries of Adam and Eve, as well as a mock biography of Twain's own ancestors.
Who is Tilbury Foster?
Tilbury Foster is Saladin's seventy-year-old, sour, supposedly rich relative. He writes that he will leave Saladin thirty thousand dollars, but only if Saladin never speaks of the gift, never asks about him and does not attend his funeral.
