About this book

What comes into view when four Gospel accounts stand side by side?

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John tell the life of Jesus with different details and orders. A. T. Robertson’s harmony, built on the earlier work of John Albert Broadus, places matching passages in parallel columns. You can follow a connected account while seeing where the Gospels agree and where they differ.

The arrangement follows the Gospel accounts from Jesus’s birth and preparation through his ministry in Galilee toward Jerusalem and the final week. Robertson adds short essays and notes on sequence, dates and apparent clashes. The result invites close comparison, while raising a question: should each Gospel’s order be read as a strict timeline?

What you’ll discover

  • Four accounts in view Read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John together without losing sight of their distinct details.
  • Beginnings placed together Compare the birth accounts in Matthew and Luke, noticing what each includes.
  • A focus on Galilee Follow accounts of Jesus teaching, healing and gathering followers around Galilee and Capernaum.
  • Questions worth examining Explore Robertson’s notes on dates, order and passages that seem to clash.
  • Room for careful judgment Consider why some scholars question reading the Gospel accounts as a strict timeline.

In short

What happens when four accounts of one life are set in columns side by side? Mark stands first, then Matthew, Luke and John, and each witness adds a detail the others leave out.

Read the four Gospels side by side

A harmony arranges the Gospels in parallel columns, so that one event can be read in each version at once. Matthew and Luke built their frameworks on Mark, and this one fact makes the story easier to follow.

What is a harmony of the Gospels?

It is a book that arranges Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in parallel columns so one event can be read in each account at once. This one follows the life of Jesus in order, from Luke's preface to the ascension.

Why is Mark in the first column?

Robertson explains that Matthew and Luke used Mark as the framework of their Gospels. Placing Mark first lets the reader follow the order of events and see how the others add to or rearrange that outline.

Who was John A. Broadus and what did he change?

Broadus prepared the earlier harmony on which this book is based. He gave up the old plan of dividing the life of Jesus by the feasts and followed the inner movement of events toward the rulers' clash.
