About this book

What if the people called lazy are living under a system that wears down their will to work?

In The Indolence of the Filipino, José Rizal confronts a charge made by Spanish writers and officials: Filipinos are lazy by nature. He does not simply reject it. Instead, he admits that idleness exists and asks what causes it—and who gains from the label.

This short essay moves from the meaning of indolence to the effects of climate and colonial rule. Rizal asks readers to distinguish sensible rest from sloth, then examines the forces that discourage work. His argument leads toward education, protection for workers and property, and an end to favoritism.

What you’ll discover

  • An unexpected starting point Rizal grants part of his critics’ claim, then turns attention toward its causes.
  • Rest is not sloth Consider his argument that conserving energy in a hot climate makes practical sense.
  • The weight of colonial rule Explore the forces that, in Rizal’s view, wear down the desire to work.
  • A stereotype under scrutiny Follow a sharp inquiry into how a label can hide questions of cause and effect.
  • Change beyond the individual Examine why Rizal places education, freedom, and protection at the heart of reform.

Who will love it

For readers curious about Philippine history, colonial rule, and how stereotypes are built and used. It suits students of politics and anyone who likes a short, sharp argument.

Name the problem before you explain it

Rizal begins by granting something his critics will not expect. He says that many Filipinos of his day do show a lack of energy, and that it would be foolish to pretend otherwise. But he insists that the question is not whether this idleness is seen. The question is what causes it.

What is The Indolence of the Filipino about?

It is an essay answering the claim that Filipinos are naturally lazy. Rizal argues that any idleness is a result of climate, colonial misrule, poor education and bad example, not of national character.

When did José Rizal write The Indolence of the Filipino?

It was published in 1890 in La Solidaridad, a journal of Filipino reformers in Spain. Rizal wrote it in Spanish, and it appeared in several installments.

Does Rizal say Filipinos were lazy?

He admits that some idleness existed in his day, but says it is a learned habit and not an inborn trait. He argues that the colonial system created it and then blamed the people.
