Über dieses Buch
What does freedom mean when your education rests on a past you cannot accept?
Vivie Warren is clever, trained in mathematics, and determined to live by her own judgment. In Mrs. Warren's Daughter, Harry Johnston takes up the heroine of George Bernard Shaw's play and explores her life beyond it. Her mother, Kitty Warren, values comfort and security—and wants the respect of a daughter who sees the world differently.
Around them, the women's movement challenges the limits placed on women's lives. Campaigns for the vote, better schooling, and access to professions shape the years before and during the First World War. Vivie's hopes meet questions that reach into her own family: what does a daughter owe her mother, and how much freedom can money buy?

Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
Vivie and Norie run a women's firm
The story opens in June 1900, in an office on Chancery Lane. Vivie Warren, about twenty-five, sits among tin boxes of clients' papers. This is the firm of Fraser and Warren, actuaries and accountants. Her partner is Honoria Fraser, whom she calls Norie. Both are Cambridge mathematicians, and they advise women about money, property and law.
A letter from Captain Frank Gardner begs her to marry him and settle in Rhodesia. Vivie cables a refusal. She wants work, a cause, and revenge on men.

What is Mrs. Warren's Daughter about?
It follows Vivie Warren, the daughter in Bernard Shaw's play, from 1900 through the war, with an epilogue imagining 1919. She disguises herself as a man to become a barrister, then joins the suffragette fight. Her love for a married scientist and the First World War shape her life.
Do I need to read Mrs. Warren's Profession first?
No. The author says you need not have read Shaw's play. The early chapters recall what matters about Vivie's mother, her hotels and Vivie's break with her, so the story stands alone.
Who is David Vavasour Williams?
He is the name Vivie takes when she dresses as a man. The name belongs to a real young Welshman she heard of from Frank Gardner, and she borrows it to pass the Bar and win a Welsh vicar's trust.
