About this book

What does a sailor see as wooden ships give way to steel battleships and command leads into conflict?

In The Memoirs of Admiral Lord Beresford, Charles Beresford traces his rise from Irish boy cadet to commander of the Channel Fleet. More than fifty years of service carry him through ships, harbours and colonial fighting. The British Empire appears from a sailor’s viewpoint, shaped by duty, royal friendships and life at sea.

Beresford moves between the quarterdeck and the House of Commons, between action in Egypt and arguments over naval reform. His service aboard the Galatea with Prince Alfred opens a world of distant ports and ceremonies. At high command, his rivalry with Sir John Fisher brings the question of how the navy should be run into sharp focus.

In short

What does it take to haul hundreds of whaleboats up the Nile cataracts, then steam a leaking river boat past a fort full of riflemen? Beresford begins with a twelve-year-old boy in a rowing boat, slapping the gunwale and begging the crew to catch an admiral.
