About this book

What does a king write when the answer he wants must come from the woman he misses?

In The Love Letters of Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn, a king asks, hopes and sometimes complains. These seventeen surviving letters belong to the late 1520s, when Henry seeks to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne. His words bring you close to the personal longing within that royal courtship.

The collection brings together short, personal, often hurried letters written in French and English. Only Henry's side survives; Anne's replies are missing. Rather than a plan of state policy, you find an impatient, affectionate man who wants an answer. Behind his requests lies the larger story of a break with Rome and a new church in England.

What you’ll discover

  • The king's great matter See how Henry's wish to end his marriage forms the background to his courtship.

Where were the Henry VIII letters to Anne Boleyn found?

Most are kept in the Vatican collection. They were printed in England in 1720 and again in 1745, and a later transcript made in Paris became the basis for the version given here.
