Über dieses Buch
Who is Don John of Austria, the man remembered here as the victor of Lepanto?
Luis Coloma places Don John of Austria at the centre of this biography, first published in 1905. Its subtitle, The Life of the Victor of Lepanto, sets the focus: not Lepanto alone, but the life of the man named as its victor.
The Story of Don John of Austria brings biography and history together. Coloma takes a named historical figure as his subject, while the subtitle links that figure directly to Lepanto. For readers curious about Don John, this is an invitation to explore his life rather than stop at his victorious title.

Kurz gesagt
A fat stranger in a little wooden house on wheels stops beside a Spanish village and asks whether Francis Massy still lives there. The children arrive at Ana's door like frightened sparrows.
Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
A royal child is hidden among peasants
In the village of Leganes, a widow named Ana de Medina raises a boy called Jeromin as her own son. He plays at Moors and Christians, shoots birds with a crossbow, and knows nothing of his birth. Yet a paper signed in Brussels says he belongs to someone far above her.
Charles Prevost, a courteous Fleming, arrives in a coach to collect him. Ana weeps and begs for more weeks, but Prevost is kind and firm. At the door Jeromin kisses her four times and sheds no tear. He gives his crossbow to Pedro Verde, his old enemy in the village battles.
