About this book
A sinking ship, an empty shore, and four sons to keep safe: where does a family begin?
In Johann David Wyss’s The Swiss Family Robinson, a Swiss pastor, his wife and their sons face a storm after the crew abandons ship. The wreck holds supplies, but reaching land takes ingenuity. With wooden tubs and planks, they make a vessel that offers a way to shore—and the chance to begin again.
The father records their struggles in his journal as a camp takes shape on the tropical island. Fritz longs to explore, Ernest wants to understand, Jack rushes toward trouble, and little Franz wants to help. Their practical mother keeps the household together. Shelter, food and safety demand shared effort, while each challenge gives the father something to teach.

In short
What would you do if a storm threw your whole family onto a shore that no map shows? The father in this book, a Swiss pastor, does not panic for long.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A storm and a tub boat save the family
The story opens on the seventh day of a storm that has driven the ship far off its course. The sailors crowd into the boats and leave the pastor, his wife Elizabeth and their four sons on the broken ship. The stern is wedged between two rocks, so the family cabin stays above water. Land lies to the south, wild and bare, but it is land.
At daybreak everyone gets a job. Fritz finds guns and powder, Ernest finds an axe and a hammer, and little Francis brings fishhooks, which his father calls the best find of all. Elizabeth finds the animals still alive. Jack opens the captain's cabin and is knocked flat by two hungry dogs, Turk and Flora. Instead of running, he rides the bigger one to his father.
