About this book

What if prayer is not a search for a finished God, but a way of helping to shape one?

In The Book of Hours, Rainer Maria Rilke turns prayer into poetry about work, loneliness, and the sacred. The Book of Monkish Life begins with a young Russian monk painting icons in his cell. He addresses a divine presence that, within these poems, still needs human hands.

The Book of Pilgrimage takes the search from the cell to the road. The Book of Poverty and Death turns toward the city, the poor, and the wish for a death that belongs to each person. Across these changing speakers and settings, Rilke explores devotion without the fixed creed of any one church.

What you’ll discover

  • The monk at work Enter a young icon painter’s cell, where the work of his hands meets prayer.
  • An unfinished divine presence Explore the monk’s bold vision of a God whom human prayer and work help build.
  • The road beyond the cell Follow a spiritual search as pilgrimage carries the speaker out into the world.
  • Poverty and a hidden God Turn toward the city and the poor as Rilke’s poems seek a hidden sacred presence.
  • A death of one’s own Consider the longing for a personal death rather than an anonymous end among strangers.

In short

Picture a monk who paints icons. In the night he speaks to God as to a neighbor on the other side of a thin wall.

What is The Book of Hours about?

It is a cycle of prayer poems spoken by a Russian monk who paints icons. Across three books he speaks to God about work, solitude, pilgrimage, poverty and death, and he pictures God as dark, unfinished and close.

Who is the speaker in The Book of Hours?

The speaker is a monk and icon painter, the voice of a quiet cell. Rilke gives him a changing role as builder, pilgrim and witness to the poor, so his voice is a character and not Rilke himself.

What are the three books in The Book of Hours?

They are The Book of Monastic Life from 1899, The Book of Pilgrimage from 1901, and The Book of Poverty and Death from 1903. Each has its own setting, moving from cell to road to the city and the poor.
