In these drawing rooms, a polite smile leaves plenty of room for cruelty.
Saki’s The Toys of Peace, and Other Papers gathers comic tales and sketches where good manners offer little protection. Bored young men, formidable hostesses and unruly children inhabit a world of drawing rooms and country houses. A courteous sentence can conceal an insult, and a tidy social scene can slide into a small disaster.
In the title story, The Toys of Peace, grown-ups want children to leave war games behind. Their efforts put adult rules up against children’s play. Across the collection, Saki, the pen name of Hector Hugh Munro, keeps his narrator’s voice cool and even. That calm makes the sharpness of the humour—and the unkindness beneath the smiles—more striking.

Aus der 15-Minuten-Zusammenfassung · Kerngedanke 1
Peace toys are no match for imagination
The title story begins with a newspaper clipping. The National Peace Council proposes toys without soldiers or guns, such as miniature civilians and ploughs before a painted Peace Palace. Eleanor Bope loves the idea. She tells her brother Harvey to buy such toys for her sons, Eric and Bertie.
Harvey is doubtful, but Eleanor does not listen. On Easter Saturday the boys hope for soldiers. Out of the red box come a municipal dustbin, a lead John Stuart Mill and a model of a women's hostel. Harvey explains a sanitary inspector, a district councillor and a ballot box.
