About this book
An orphan among traders becomes a preacher whose message challenges the leaders of Mecca.
In The Life of Mohammad, the Prophet of Allah, Etienne Dinet and Sliman Ben Ibrahim trace Muhammad’s life as Muslim tradition tells it. Their account moves from Mecca to Medina and back, following a husband and merchant who becomes a preacher, a refugee and a leader.
The authors explore a world where trade, worship and power meet around the Kaaba. In their telling, Muhammad’s call to one God, justice and equality threatens Mecca’s leaders. Dinet, a French painter who becomes a Muslim, seeks to offer European readers a respectful alternative to hostile accounts.

In short
Picture a town with no resources of its own, tucked into a rocky valley, where livelihoods depend on caravans trading with Yaman and Syria. Out of that town, in the year 570, comes a child who loses his father before birth and his mother at six.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A desert town shelters a sacred house
The book begins in Makkah, a town modest in every worldly way. It sits in a narrow, rocky valley with no oasis and no river. Its only income comes from caravans. Yet its fame rests on the Ka'bah, a black cube draped in silk, which the authors call the Holy House of Allah.
Over the centuries the tribes forgot the one God and set up three hundred and sixty images around it. Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib, marries Aminah and dies two months before the birth. Mohammad is born on August 29, 570. He is sent to the Bedouin, where a poor nurse named Halimah takes him when no one else will, and her flocks flourish from that day.

Who wrote this biography and when?

What sources does the book use?
The authors follow the early biographers Ibn Hisham and Ibn Sa'd and the later writer Al-Halabi, and they check scenes against the Qur'an. They retell legends as parables and leave out miracles said to have come after his death.
