About this book
Who gets to claim the grass, water, and trees—and who stands up for the people who come after?
In Hamlin Garland’s Cavanagh, Forest Ranger, a young ranger enforces rules on land that belongs to the nation. Around him, local interests resist the new Forest Service. They see the open range as theirs to use. Cavanagh’s duty reaches beyond his neighbors: he serves the public, including people not yet born.
Set in the high country of the Rockies, this adventure pairs a fight over wild land with a love story. Cavanagh’s feelings for a woman of the region cannot be separated from his work. As private gain pulls against the common good, Garland brings the ranger’s daily pressures into a landscape of mountains, forests, streams, and weather.

Lee Virginia Finds the West Has Changed
Lee Virginia Wetherford starts her journey in high spirits. She has spent ten years with an aunt near Philadelphia, and she carries a picture of the West as a place of bold cowboys, with her own father as a free and daring leader.
The old stagecoach is gone. A shining red automobile now makes the trip to Roaring Fork in five hours. Along the road she sees wire fences and painted farmhouses where only sagebrush grew before. Sam Gregg curses the ranger Ross Cavanagh, and passengers criticize the food served by Lee's mother, leaving Lee crimson and burning.

Who wrote Cavanagh, Forest Ranger and when?
Hamlin Garland, an American author who died in 1940, wrote it. It was set in the years when national forests and the Forest Service were new, and the old cattle range was giving way to farms and law.
What is the New West in the book?
The New West is the vision of Redfield and Cavanagh. It means law, clean homes, farms and public forests managed for everyone, in place of free range, lynch law and the rule of the strongest cattleman.
