About this book
What hides inside a nursery rhyme—a village joke, an old belief, or words never meant for children?
In Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales, James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps gathers verses and stories that English children learn by ear across generations. Published in 1849, the collection preserves words passed from nurse to child and from child to child. Behind their familiar rhythms lies a question: what disappears when nobody writes them down?
Nursery songs, lullabies and tales sit alongside rhymes rooted in country life, local customs, weather and belief. Halliwell-Phillipps groups the material by use, with notes on its origins and changes. Some verses carry the names of places and families; others hold a town’s joke or grievance within a few memorable lines.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
These rhymes are older than childhood books
Halliwell starts from a simple idea. Many verses that children chant are not made for children at all. They are scraps of older songs, charms, ballads and street cries that drifted into the nursery and stayed there.
He treats them as a kind of living antiquity. A rhyme can keep an old word, an old custom or an old joke long after the world around it has changed. A child who skips to a counting verse may be repeating something that adults once sang or spoke for quite different reasons.

What is Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales about?
It is a collection of traditional English rhymes, riddles, game verses, lullabies and fireside tales, gathered from oral tradition. Halliwell groups them by use and adds notes on their sources and variations.
When was Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales written?
It was published in 1849. Halliwell prepared it as a sequel to his earlier collection of English nursery rhymes, and it widened the field to include games, riddles, sayings and tales.
Are the rhymes in the book really old?
Many are. Halliwell argues that numerous nursery verses are fragments of older songs, charms and ballads. His notes compare versions from different regions and point out older parallels where he could find them.
